It all started when I was a kid, while my older brother would smash tiny cars against each other, I would park them, arrange them by size and colour and line them up them into a perfect queue. I know, a bit weird, but that quirk followed me into my adulthood and turned me into a pretty organised individual, always striving for a tidy home.<\/p>\n
The declutter and minimalist part came later, much later. As many I used to follow the tide and I never even stopped to reflect on the amount of things I owned. Having a good corporate job allowed me to afford what I desired, just spending on the next piece of clothing or gadget because “why not?”, without actually questioning if I really needed it. I worked hard, I deserved it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But then something happened, one beautiful summer day a pipe burst outside my apartment and in a few minutes my basement was flooded. I was at work, obviously, but when I came back I had to spend all evening emptying the room, feet in the mud up to my ankle. Meanwhile, my partner was upstairs playing with our two kids.<\/p>\n
Why did we accumulate all that stuff? Why did we keep all that stuff? Most of it was utterly useless and there I was, wasting my time and already depleted energies cleaning up a pointless mess, instead of enjoying quality time with my family.<\/p>\n
When I went back upstairs I was looking at things differently, realised that an organised and tidy home doesn’t mean a clear, simple environment. I would spend a lot of time just putting things in the right place, while I could have saved that if I simply didn’t have those things at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Accumulating objects doesn’t make you richer, just the opposite, apart from the money that could be spent better, it also steals the most valuable asset we have: time. Time to research, time to buy, time to take care of it, the time we always complain we don’t have enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I decided to claim back my time, to spend my money more intentionally, to not keep things “just in case”, but to get them when I actually need them, to own only what I use and what I love.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Once I’ve embarked in this journey I wanted to go further, so I enrolled in a coaching program with Selim Tolga and I’m now a Certified Declutter and Minimalism Coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n
